What are my options if I want to change the shape of my teeth?

The two common treatment solutions are dental crowns and veneers. Dental crowns are caps placed over the teeth. These appliances are tooth-shaped and cemented into place. Once in place, the crowns fully cover the visible portion of a tooth/teeth lying at and above the gum line.

Veneers are customized shells made of tooth-colored materials designed to cover the front surface of teeth. These appliances are wafer thin and bonded to the front of the teeth.

These two solutions have different costs, durability, and treatment times. They also differ with regard to stain resistance and cosmetic approach. They both, however, can make teeth appear longer; close the spaces between teeth, and repair cracked or chipped teeth.

Who can get implants, and what are the benefits of dental implants?

Dental implants give your teeth a more natural look because they integrate into the structure of your bone. These are also more secure and comfortable than conventional dentures. You can eat and speak with confidence knowing they will not slip off.

A good candidate for this procedure is anyone who is missing one or more teeth and wants a long-lasting solution for it. Your jaw must have enough bone to support and stabilize the implant. Bone grafting is necessary if you have suffered bone loss because of gum disease or some other disease.

What causes bruxism (teeth grinding) and how is it treated?

A range of emotional and physical factors causes teeth grinding. Underlying factors often include crooked or missing teeth, an abnormal bite, and stress. The treatment methods vary according to the cause, and may involve one or a combination of the following:

  • A plastic tooth/bite guard for use during sleep at night
  • Physical therapy
  • Muscle relaxants

Relaxation techniques are also effective if stress is determined to be the root of the problem.
